What is VO2 Max?
VO2 Max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise, measured in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (mL/kg/min). It's considered the gold-standard measure of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic capacity.
How Does The Test Work?
You'll exercise on a treadmill at gradually increasing intensity while wearing a lightweight mask connected to our Korr CardioCoach system. The device analyzes the air you breathe in and out to directly measure how much oxygen your body is using - this is called direct gas exchange analysis, and it's more accurate than estimates based on heart rate or age-based formulas alone.
How Long Does It Take?
The exercise portion typically lasts 20 minutes, ending when you reach your maximum effort. With setup, mask fitting, and a cooldown, plan on 30–45 minutes total.
How Will I Feel During The Test?
The workload increases in stages, so it starts easy and gets progressively harder until you can't sustain the pace or resistance - this is the point of "voluntary exhaustion" we're testing for. You’ll maintain the same speed on the treadmill, but the incline will increase every few minutes to help increase the intensity. The final 1-2 minutes are meant to feel maximally difficult; that's expected and by design.
Is The Test Safe For Me?
Yes, for the vast majority of people. Our team monitors you throughout, and you can stop at any time. If you have known cardiac risk factors, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or other significant health conditions, we may ask for medical clearance from your physician first.
I'm Not An Athlete, Is This Test Still Useful For Me?
Yes. VO2 max is a strong predictor of long-term cardiovascular health and is relevant at every fitness level. For general health patients, results often guide safe, effective exercise intensity and can serve as a baseline to track improvement over time.By understanding your heart rate zones, you can exercise with more informed paces and goals that can maximize your efforts during regular exercise.
